The goal today was 2 miles at easy pace, 4 x 5 minutes at threshold pace (with 1 minute rests), 1 hour at easy pace, 15 minutes at threshold pace and finally 2 miles at easy pace. In total it was 24.18km and 2 hours 6 minutes.
It was my longest run and the first time I've cracked the 2 hour mark. My pace was on target (4:20 min/km) for the first 4 threshold segments (4:27 / 4:23 / 4:17 / 4:36) but a bit too slow for the final 15 minutes at threshold (4:38). My final threshold of the first four looks slow (4:36) but the first minute was spent fumbling with the gel.
I brought two gels with me on my run for fuel - GU Roctane and GU Energy Gel (Jet Blackberry). Both tasted pretty good and definitely gave me enough energy to complete my training. However, the consumption of the gels wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. I thought it would just slide out of the package and I'd be able to gulp it down in one mouthful. It took some effort to get it out and plenty of Gatorade to wash it down. I figure I'll need at least 4 gels for the marathon - and I barely had room for two on my fuel belt. I'm going to have to find an easier solution.
Even thought it took over 2 hours to complete this session, the time seemed to fly by. My feet were soaked by the end, but that didn't really bother me. I was listening to various podcasts and training updates on my iPhone - until it died on me with about 5 minutes left in my run (shown by the sudden drop in speed at the end of the graph below).
