Day 115 - 52 Days To Go

My guest blog on the Credit Valley Hospital website was officially posted today. It did take me some time to decide whether I wanted to "officially" put this blog out there for everyone to see - but I figured if I was going to put myself out there, I may as way go all the way.

Today was a quality session indoors on the treadmill. 2 miles at easy pace, 8 x (5 minutes at threshold with 30 second rests), ending with another 2 miles at easy pace. It took me an hour and twenty minutes, 13.97km. I almost didn't do a quality session - and was going to blame it on another headache - but by the time I started running the headache had disappeared so I no longer had an excuse!

Welcome Message

Hello all!

So! I’ve signed up to run the Mississauga Marathon in May 2011 – my first ever attempt at 42km. Although one of my goals is to just finish the marathon, I have other loftier goals. When I cross the finish line I want to feel like I've pushed myself as far as my body will allow me to go.

Although this may sound strange, my motivation for my first marathon is all of you – and a lot of others who aren’t on this e-mail list.

Over the past few years I’ve come to realise that although there are a lot of good times, sometimes the tough times can be overwhelming. During a conversation with my mom a few days before she died, she told me “There are a lot of other people who have it a lot worse than us.”

Over the past few months alone I know of 5 separate cases of people who are going through tough times because of Cancer or the threat of Cancer. But there are even others who are dealing with other health issues, family problems, battling loneliness, etc.

I felt that running a marathon only for myself, or dedicating it to one person would not be as productive as running for all my friends and family – those that are going through tough times now and those that may have the misfortune of having tough times ahead. I’d like this run to be a positive experience for everyone who’d like it to be.

I’m hoping you’ll support me – and you can show your support in a couple of ways. I’ve started a blog that is chronicling my training as I prepare for the marathon so I’d love it if you would join and check in on my progress over the next 22 weeks.

Also - if you’re willing, I’d like you to show your support by pledging. My charity of choice is the Credit Valley Hospital Foundation. It’s where my dad spent a lot of hours and where my mom spent her final few hours – the doctors, nurses were always helpful, sincere, respectful, etc. and I really have nothing but positive thoughts on how we were treated at Credit Valley.

However – there are several different charities linked to the Mississauga Marathon that you can support and I encourage you to support any that speaks to you more than another. I have no intention of making this an annual request, and because I want this to mean more than just “raising money” – I’ll put down $200 of my own money once I hit $400 of pledges (by people not related to me). If I’m asking you to donate, I should be expected to as well.
